Privacy & Security

Okane is built on a simple principle: your financial data belongs to you. Here's exactly how we protect it.

Last updated: April 2026

Your Data, Your Spreadsheet

Unlike most budgeting apps, Okane doesn't store your budget on our servers. Your financial data lives in a Google Sheets spreadsheet in your own Google Drive.

What this means: If Okane disappeared tomorrow, your budget would still be sitting in Google Sheets — fully accessible, editable, and exportable. No vendor lock-in. No data hostage situations.

You can open your budget spreadsheet anytime, share it with a partner, build custom charts, or download it as Excel, CSV, or PDF. It's a real file that you own.

What We Collect vs. What Stays Yours

Data Where It Lives Who Controls It
Budget categories, amounts, transactions Your Google Sheet You
Spreadsheet structure & formulas Your Google Sheet You
Google account email (for sign-in) Our auth system Okane
Plaid bank connection token (premium) Our servers (encrypted) Okane
Pending bank transactions (premium) Our servers (temporary) Okane — deleted after you confirm
Crash logs & anonymized analytics Firebase Okane (anonymized)

The short version: Your actual financial data stays in your Google Sheet. We hold the minimum needed to make the app work — authentication and, for premium users, a temporary bridge for bank transactions.

Bank Sync & Plaid Security

For premium users who opt into automatic bank sync, Okane uses Plaid — the same infrastructure trusted by Venmo, Robinhood, Coinbase, and thousands of other financial apps.

Here's how it works:

  • Read-only access — Plaid connects to your bank in read-only mode. It can see transactions and balances, but it cannot move money, make payments, or modify your accounts.
  • Tokenized connection — Okane never sees your bank username or password. Plaid provides a secure token that represents your connection. Even if our servers were compromised, your bank credentials wouldn't be exposed.
  • AES-256 encryption — All data transmitted through Plaid is encrypted with AES-256, the same standard used by banks and governments.
  • Temporary storage — Imported transactions are held on our servers only until you confirm them in the app. Once confirmed, they're written to your Google Sheet and removed from our systems.

Bank sync is entirely optional. Okane works great with manual transaction entry if you prefer not to connect your bank.

Encryption & Transport Security

  • HTTPS/TLS everywhere — All communication between the Okane app, our servers, Google APIs, and Plaid is encrypted in transit using TLS 1.2+.
  • Encrypted at rest — Any data temporarily stored on our servers (Plaid tokens, pending transactions) is encrypted at rest using industry-standard encryption.
  • Google's security — Your spreadsheet benefits from Google's enterprise-grade security infrastructure, including encryption, redundancy, and access controls.

We Don't Sell Your Data

Okane does not sell, rent, trade, or share your personal or financial data with advertisers, data brokers, or any third party. Our business model is straightforward: we make money from premium subscriptions, not from your data.

We use anonymized, aggregate analytics (via Firebase) to understand how the app is used and improve it. These analytics contain no personally identifiable financial information.

Google API Compliance

Okane's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically:

  • We only access Google Sheets and Drive data necessary for the app to function.
  • We do not use Google data for advertising or sell it to third parties.
  • We do not allow humans to read your data unless you explicitly consent (e.g., for support).

How to Revoke Access

You're always in control. Here's how to disconnect Okane from your accounts:

  • Revoke Google access: Go to Google Account → Security → Third-party apps and remove Okane. This stops the app from accessing your spreadsheet.
  • Disconnect bank sync: In the Okane app, go to Settings and disconnect your bank account. You can also contact us and we'll remove the Plaid connection on our end.
  • Delete your data: Delete the budget spreadsheet from your Google Drive. Since that's where your data lives, deleting it removes your financial data entirely.
  • Delete your account: Email us at mike.from.okane@gmail.com and we'll delete your account and any associated data from our systems.
